The Indian Connection: Unmasking the Fake Iranian Network Targeting Pakistan

The digital frontier of South Asia has been rattled by the exposure of a sophisticated, multi-layered “hub and spoke” disinformation operation designed to fracture Pakistan’s regional alliances. Recent investigative findings have unveiled a coordinated network of fake social media accounts that meticulously impersonated Iranian citizens and news outlets to broadcast anti Pakistan propaganda. While these accounts disguised Persian diplomacy, forensic evidence and behavioural tracking have traced its strategic control directly to Indian linked entities, with operational support identified in India and Afghanistan. By weaponizing these “ghost digital footprints” to simulate organic friction between Islamabad and Tehran, the operation represents a calculated escalation in India’s hybrid warfare tactics.

The campaign operated through a structured three tier model consisting of Initiators, Proliferators, and Amplifiers. It began with “Initiator” accounts, such as the fake INN (Iran News Network) and Iran TV, which planted fabricated narratives. These were then picked up by “Proliferators” often Afghan based accounts and finally upscaled by Indian managed “Amplifiers” to create an illusion of widespread regional outrage. A primary narrative pushed by the network included the baseless claim that Pakistan was transporting oil for the United States, a move intended to portray Islamabad as an anti Iran actor.

By masquerading as Iranian voices, the architects of this campaign sought to sow seeds ofdistrust between Islamabad and Tehran while simultaneously working to isolate Pakistan within the Muslim world. Ultimately, the network aimed to destabilize internal social cohesion through state sponsored digital deception, painting Pakistan as a pariah to both its neighbours and its own citizens.

This discovery is not an isolated event; it bears the unmistakable hallmarks of the “Indian Chronicles”, the massive 15 year disinformation operation previously exposed by the EU Disinfo Lab. Just as that network resurrected dead NGOs and created hundreds of fake media outlets to target Pakistan at the UN and EU, this current campaign utilizes modern masking techniques to manipulate public perception. As India continues to refine its hybrid warfare toolkit, the exposure of the fake Iranian news hub serves as a stark reminder of the “information pandemic” threatening South Asian stability. Experts warn that as long as these covert operations remain unpunished on the global stage, the risk of a digital spark igniting a real world regional conflict remains high.
