The high octane environment of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) has been rocked by its most significant disciplinary crisis to date. On March 31, 2026, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed a two match suspension for Lahore Qalandars’ star opener Fakhar Zaman, following a high profile ball tampering allegation during a nail biting clash against Karachi Kings at Gaddafi Stadium.
The controversy erupted during the penultimate over of the Karachi Kings’ chase on March 29. Just as the match reached its tipping point, on field umpires Shahid Saikat and Faisal Khan Aafreedi intervened, citing a deliberate alteration of the ball’s condition. In a rare move that stunned the home crowd, the officials awarded five penalty runs to Karachi Kings and ordered an immediate ball change. According to The Express Tribune, this decision proved decisive, as it slashed the required runs for Karachi just before the final over.
Fakhar was charged under Article 2.14 of the PSL Code of Conduct, which strictly prohibits changing the condition of the ball. While Fakhar denied the charges, a formal disciplinary hearing conducted by Match Referee Roshan Mahanama upheld the allegation. As reported by Dawn News, the two match ban is the maximum penalty for a first time Level 3 offense. This suspension sidelines the explosive left hander for the Qalandars’ crucial upcoming fixtures against Multan Sultans (April 3) and Islamabad United (April 9).
The timing could not be worse for the defending champions. Global sporting analysts note that losing a cornerstone of their batting lineup mid tournament creates a “technical vacuum” that is difficult to fill. While team director Sameen Rana and captain Shaheen Shah Afridi have publicly backed Fakhar, the Qalandars must now navigate a gruelling week without their primary aggressor.
As of April 1, Fakhar has reportedly lodged an appeal with the PSL Technical Committee. Until a verdict is reached, the Qalandars face an uphill battle to maintain their momentum in a season now defined by this off field drama.
