After forty one days of intense regional conflict and a suffocating global energy crisis, a glimmer of hope has emerged from the shadows of was of civilizational decay. The announcement of the ceasefire in the Middle East marks a pivotal moment as there was a catastrophic blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. While the world teetered on the precipice of the deep economic depression, it was the Islamic Republic of Pakistan that took the center stage broke the deadlock unlike any traditional power centers of the West of the East.
The breakthrough is the proof of Pakistan’s astute diplomacy and unflinching resolve of its leadership. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Asim Munir and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar orchestrated a dominant role in geopolitical mediation, compelling the US and Iran to retreat from the point of no return. Islamabad’s proactive diplomacy has brought it to the epicenter of international peace-building, where major powers like China, Russia and the EU failed to help maintain the status quo.
The scheduled talks between the US and Iran represent a monumental feat. In order to turn 15 day silencing of guns into a permanent settlement will be a herculean task of the dialogue. The agenda of the talks should be to ensure a robust confidence-building measures, the security of the Gulf States and addressing the existential necessity of Palestinian Statehood. Moreover, there is a need to devise an undeterred navigation mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz for global economic stability, as its anarchic mechanism threatens to derail the fragile peace.
While parties have agreed to sit on the table, but serious challenges remain. The exclusion of Lebanon from the ceasefire and continued strikes by the Israel is of grave concern, as it can jeopardize the entire peace process. Nevertheless, the restraint shown by the Gulf States has been crucial in preventing a total conflagration. The talks in Islamabad could initiate a new world order rooted in International Law, territorial integrity and equitable access to peaceful use of nuclear energy. As Pakistan has managed to settle the dust od warmongering, it is incumbent upon the global community to honor Pakistan and its leadership for prescription for peace.
