Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem is set to return to elite international competition after being named in the official entry list for the men’s javelin throw at the Lausanne Diamond League, scheduled to take place on August 21 in Switzerland.
The event is expected to feature one of the strongest javelin fields of the season, bringing together Olympic champions, world champions and some of the sport’s biggest names. Among Nadeem’s fiercest rivals will be India’s Neeraj Chopra, whose rivalry with the Pakistani star has become one of athletics most closely watched contests. Also in the field are two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, former Olympic champion Thomas Röhler of Germany, Czech veteran Jakub Vadlejch, Trinidad and Tobago’s Olympic medallist Keshorn Walcott, American Curtis Thompson, Germany’s Julian Weber, Switzerland’s Simon Wieland, and Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage, who recently claimed Commonwealth Games gold and currently leads the world rankings.
The Lausanne Diamond League will provide Nadeem with an opportunity to bounce back after his performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Entering the competition as the defending champion, the 29-year-old endured a difficult outing and finished ninth in the 12-man final, missing out on a place among the top eight after three attempts.
Nadeem opened his campaign with a foul before recording a throw of 77.41 metres in his second attempt. Needing a significant improvement to remain in medal contention, he managed only 75.39 metres with his third throw, ending his challenge earlier than expected.
The result came as a surprise given Nadeem’s remarkable achievements in recent years. At the previous Commonwealth Games, he produced a sensational throw of 90.18 metres to win the gold medal, becoming the first Pakistani athlete to cross the prestigious 90-metre mark in international competition. He has since cemented his place among the world’s elite javelin throwers with his Olympic triumph and consistent performances on the global stage.
The Lausanne meeting now offers Nadeem a chance to regain momentum against the very best in the sport.
