The diplomatic relationship between Pakistan and Canada is poised for a significant milestone as Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand prepares for an official visit to Islamabad. According to announcements from both Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO), the visit marks a historic turning point, being the first time, a Canadian foreign minister has travelled to Pakistan in two decades.

Minister Anand’s itinerary features a high-profile agenda aimed at broadening bilateral ties. She will hold comprehensive talks with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar. The discussions are slated to cover the entire spectrum of Pakistan-Canada relations, with a heavy emphasis on bolstering economic collaboration. Key focus areas include trade and investment, educational partnerships, and enhancing people-to-people exchanges. Beyond bilateral affairs, the two leaders are also expected to deliberate on regional and global security developments of mutual interest.

In addition to her formal session with Foreign Minister Dar, Anand is expected to call on Pakistan’s top leadership, including a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Both governments have emphasized that the foundation of their relationship lies in deep-rooted community ties. GAC highlighted that Canada is home to a vibrant diaspora of over 300,000 Canadians of Pakistani origin, while roughly 20,000 Canadians currently reside in Pakistan. The Foreign Office mirrored this sentiment, noting that the vibrant diaspora serves as a vital bridge that enriches their cordial diplomatic ties.

The visit arrives on the heels of increasing diplomatic and economic momentum between Ottawa and Islamabad. Just last month, Canada hosted the second round of negotiations aimed at finalizing a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA) with Pakistan. This followed the sixth round of Bilateral Political Consultations held in Islamabad earlier this year, where both nations reaffirmed their commitments to dismantling trade barriers and unlocking new investment pathways.

Minister Anand’s arrival underscores a renewed shared commitment to move past decades of stagnant high-level engagement and build a more robust, contemporary partnership. Following her engagements in Pakistan, the Canadian foreign minister is scheduled to travel to the Philippines, where she will participate in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meetings to further advance Canada’s broader Indo-Pacific strategic partnerships.
