Pakistan is set to welcome international hockey back to its home soil after nearly two decades as the South Korean national team arrived in Islamabad for a four-match FIH-approved Test series. The tour marks the first formal bilateral international hockey series hosted by Pakistan since foreign teams largely stopped visiting the country due to security concerns, making it a significant moment in the country’s sporting revival.

The four-Test series will begin on July 30, with subsequent matches scheduled for August 1, 4 and 7. All fixtures will be played in Islamabad, providing local fans with a rare opportunity to watch international hockey in Pakistan. Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) officials have described the series as an important step towards restoring the country’s reputation as a safe and capable host of international sporting events while also offering valuable competitive exposure to both teams.

Confidence in Pakistan’s Sporting Revival

The arrival of the Korean team reflects growing international confidence in Pakistan’s security arrangements and its ability to successfully organise international competitions. Over the past few years, Pakistan has gradually hosted several international sporting events, particularly in cricket, and the return of international hockey is viewed as another milestone in that broader resurgence. Welcoming the visiting side at Islamabad, PHF President Mohiuddin Ahmed Wani called the occasion a proud moment for Pakistan hockey.

“After almost two decades, we are once again welcoming an international team in Pakistan,” Wani said. He added that the series would not only showcase high-quality hockey but also strengthen the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and South Korea. The PHF also acknowledged the support of the federal government, security agencies and other stakeholders for facilitating the tour and ensuring the smooth conduct of the series.

Crucial Preparation Before the World Cup

Beyond its symbolic importance, the series carries significant sporting value for both teams. The four FIH-approved Test matches will provide international match practice ahead of major upcoming tournaments, allowing coaches to assess combinations and players to regain competitive rhythm. The fixtures are especially important for Pakistan, which is preparing for the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup, scheduled from August 15 to 30 and co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands.

The Test series also represents the first major assignment for Pakistan’s newly appointed high-performance coaching staff. Earlier this month, the PHF announced an internationally recognised coaching team as part of its broader strategy to revive the national side and restore Pakistan’s position among the world’s leading hockey nations.

A New Chapter for the National Game

Once a dominant force in world hockey, Pakistan boasts an illustrious history that includes multiple World Cup and Olympic titles. However, the country’s fortunes have declined over the past two decades, accompanied by limited opportunities to host international competition. The Korean team’s visit offers renewed optimism that Pakistan hockey is gradually rebuilding both on and off the field. Strong performances, successful event management and enthusiastic public support could encourage more international teams to tour the country in the future.

For Pakistan, the series is more than just four Test matches. It represents a symbolic return of international hockey, a chance to reconnect fans with the national game, and another step in the long journey towards restoring Pakistan’s place on the global hockey stage.
