Sixty-eight years after his martyrdom, the name of Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed continues to embody the courage, duty and sacrifice associated with Pakistan’s armed forces. Among the earliest recipients of the Nishan-e-Haider, the country’s highest military honour, he remains remembered for leading from the front and pressing on despite grievous wounds.

Born in 1914 in Hoshiarpur, East Punjab, Tufail Muhammad had already built a career as a soldier, serving in the British Indian Army. After Independence in 1947, he chose to serve the new nation, commissioned into the 16th Punjab Regiment and later posted with the East Pakistan Rifles, where he built a reputation for discipline and leadership that set him apart among his peers.

In 1957, Indian troops crossed the border and occupied the village of Lakshmipur in East Pakistan’s Sylhet district. The following August, Major Tufail, then a company commander, was tasked with reclaiming the territory. Leading his men in a coordinated assault against an entrenched enemy position, he pressed the attack at close quarters, at times within yards of enemy lines.

The battle became a test of sheer endurance. Struck by enemy fire and critically wounded, Major Tufail refused to withdraw. He continued directing his troops and pushing the offensive forward, and his determination helped his men force the enemy into retreat and reclaim the position. He succumbed to his wounds on 7 August 1958.

His sacrifice earned him the Nishan-e-Haider, making him one of the earliest and most distinguished recipients of Pakistan’s highest military honour — a legacy that earned him the title “Fateh-e-Lakshmipur,” Victor of Lakshmipur.

What distinguishes his story is not simply the circumstances of his death, but the resolve he showed when the mission and his own survival stood in direct conflict. He chose the mission.

Each year on his martyrdom anniversary, Pakistan’s military leadership and citizens alike honour Major Tufail alongside the countless soldiers who have given their lives in the country’s defence. His story endures because it represents a timeless military ideal: courage under fire, loyalty to those he commanded, and an unshakeable commitment to duty.

For generations of Pakistanis, Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed remains more than a name etched among the nation’s decorated heroes. His final battle stands as a lasting reminder that the truest measure of service is sometimes the willingness to place duty above self — a legacy that continues to inspire the whole nation.
